This position is located in the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Technical Branch of the Occupational Safety, Health, and Environmental Office of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard located in Kittery, Maine. This position also serves as a Certified Navy Gas Free Engineer.
The duties and responsibilities at the GS-09 level are essentially the same as those at the full performance level except the incumbent is under closer supervision and receives more detailed instructions. The incumbent will become sufficiently familiar with the programs of the organization and their relationships with other organizations to satisfactorily perform the full range of duties of the position. This position has known promotion potential to GS-12.
You must be a US Citizen. Must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal & Regulatory Guidance. Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation. Selectee may be required to successfully complete a probationary period. You must obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
Assisting in administering one or more of the NAVOSH programs such as the respiratory protection, asbestos control, hearing conservation, sight conservation, personal protective equipment, lead control, etc.
Assisting in conducting investigations and special surveys to identify, evaluate, and control condition or hazards that may cause occupational illness, injury, or otherwise affect the wellbeing of Shipyard employees performing operations in shore facilities and shipboard.
Assisting in providing gas free engineering technical expertise to the Shipyard.
Assisting in performing industrial hygiene investigations of illnesses or discomforts alleged to have resulted from exposure of workers to certain environmental conditions.

Basic Requirements :
A) Degree : industrial hygiene; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

B) Combination of education and experience -- at least 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours as specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position such as:
Assisting in investigating and analyzing various industrial hygiene related conditions.
Evaluating the Occupational Safety and Health program effectiveness.
Assisting in reviewing and developing industrial hygiene procedures.
Assisting with various types of Gas Free Engineering.
Assisting with lead and/or asbestos bulk sampling.

Selectee is required to participate in the Department of Defense direct deposit of pay program.
The selectee must obtain certification as a Navy Gas Free Engineer by the Navy Gas Free Engineer Certification Board after selection to this position.
