This is a Pathway Intern Position. This position is that of a student trainee (Mechanical Engineering) in the Cooperative Education Agreement with an accredited college or university. It is located at Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), Mid-Atlantic (MIDLANT) Kittery, Maine at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. This position is part of a regionalized command. The program of academic study includes courses in the mechanical engineering discipline as well as related courses in applied mathematics and the physical sciences. The incumbent assists in updating mechanical engineering drawings and collects technical data for inclusion in engineering studies, design and reports. You will be working under the supervision and mentored by highly qualified mechanical engineers with a wealth of experience in the facilities and utilities fields. Our engineering staff provides design and consultation support to highly specialized buildings supporting the submarines overhaul activities. In addition, our engineers support an extensive network of utilities including a central power plant providing support to highly complex industrial operation.
Who May Apply:
All United States Citizens currently residing in the local commuting area of Kittery, Maine AND currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a qualifying educational institution (high school; 4-year college/university; community college; junior college; professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying education institution) on a full or part-time basis and seeking a degree or certificate.
Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation. You must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled in school.
Student Trainee assist in preparing reports, charts, and graphs for presentations of mechanical operational and production characteristics, procedures, efficiencies, conditions, trends and functions. Assist engineers and technicians by developing project scopes and estimate cost from site plans and specifications where the information developed is easily recognized and the features and contents are specific in detail. Analyzes and present data in accordance with established procedures.
You are eligible if you are currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree.
Student Trainees qualify for an initial appointment based on their educational achievements in accordance with Subpart B of 5 CFR Part 362 and the criteria in this standard. Applicants must be current students pursuing a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution (See 5 CFR 362.102).

Have successfully completed 1 academic year of post-high school study as an engineering student at an ABET accredited college or university.
To qualify for this position at the GS-04 level, you must meet one of the following:
Have one full year of general experience; reviewing technical drawings or specifications for accuracy or completeness; preparing reports or documents for technical use; or assisting with non-compliance work on a construction site:

Have completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study leading to a degree in Engineering or an associate's degree (must submit transcripts).
Or
Have a combination of experience and education as described above which, when combined, is equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement.
