Fiber Technician
Summary:
Primary responsibilities include maintenance and repair of a GPON/XGS-PON system.
Splicing fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor settings, reading and maintaining splicing schematics and diagrams, managing outside plant (OSP) activities at and around the assigned work site(s), and maintaining accurate splicing and field notes.
The majority of tasks occur in the field and may require overtime, including evening and night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Job Functions:
The job functions and responsibilities of a Fiber Technician include:
Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair all impairments within the fiber network that may be customers.
Contribute to the design of installation/activation of point-to-point CWDM, and DWDM as neededSplicing fiber optic cables including both loose-tube and ribbon optic cables.
Reconstructing splice cases, including but not limited to grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing.
Maintaining splicing records, schematics, and diagrams.
Performing work with an OTDR, PON meter, Fiber Scope, or any other required test equipment to properly maintain the system.
Performing work in accordance with industry standards.
Reading and following instructions and specifications, managing and maintaining the scope of work on the project, and adhering to safety procedures are required.
Preparing field notes, interpreting buried and aerial telecom facilities in records, on maps, and in the field, and recommending changes in running line or construction methodologies.
Entering and maintaining outside plant records.
Participating in permitting and construction processes to support system maintenance and projects.
Complete and maintain accurate records including work orders, daily logs, and other necessary paperwork.
Clean and maintain assigned equipment and stock assigned vehicles.
Assist with installation, service calls, and escalations as neededBackground, Experience, and Skills:
The Fiber Technician position requires background, experience, and skills in each of the following:
o Knowledge of fiber PON/XGS-PON design techniques.
o Experience with fusion splicing both loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cables including the ability to place a mid-sheath splice.
o Working knowledge and experience with current computerized operations.
o Proficiency with Microsoft applications.
o Ability to work with clients and/or customer contacts regarding best maintenance and construction practices.
o Ability to pay close attention to detail and make good sound decisions based on information given.
o Ability to multitask and stay organized under pressure.
o Must hold a valid Driver's License.
Education and
Experience:
o One year (minimum) experience in outside plant construction.
o Two years (minimum) experience in fiber optic cable splicing and maintenance.
o Strong computer skills with Microsoft applications.
o In-depth understanding of technology-based services, products and networking Other Skills and AbilitiesAbility to accurately measure distances, using tapes or other measuring devices.
Ability to adhere to Local and federal regulations and Company policies.
Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder, (approx.
32 ft high and 75 pounds).
Must be able to climb ladders and operate Aerial Lift Equipment rated with a 350lb maximum total load capacityAbility to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires.
Ability to drive Company vehicle safely and responsibly.
Ability to make cable connections in tight spaces by bending, reaching, and twisting.
Ability to operate appropriate computer or test equipment associated with the position.
Ability to perform jobs from high places (i.
e.
, poles and roofs).
Ability to prioritize and organize effectively.
